In the summer months, tourists flock to the city and enjoy the warm weather, and while the atmosphere and weather are hot, so are the prices. Assume that accommodation and flights will be more expensive during the high season.

The national language in Austria is German (there is no such thing as ‘Austrian’), although accents and some vocabulary differs. The local Viennese dialect (Wienerisch) is quite different to the accent in Germany so even if you can speak German, you may find it difficult to understand locals. Most people speak English though, especially in the tourist areas!

Typically, the best time to visit is from April through to early October. Late spring through early fall tends to be especially pleasant, owing to its long, often warm and sunny days and abundant daylight. During the winter months, average temperatures are generally quite cold to freezing. Occasionally, cold winds from the nearby mountains can contribute to temperatures falling well below freezing. The rainiest winter month is November, while January is the driest. 

Home to numerous museums, palaces, opera houses and the world’s oldest zoo, Vienna is not to be missed. Referred to as one of the most culturally rich cities in Europe, there is more than enough to keep you occupied on your break to Vienna.

The whole city is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so you will never be far from a beautiful building. If you’re a foodie, don’t forget to indulge in local Viennese cuisine.
