Kavala is situated on the Bay of Kavala opposite the island of Thassos and was built on top of the ancient city of Neapolis.

The lovely squares, contemporary buildings, and shopping centres on the west side of the city form a pleasant contrast to the traditional old houses, tiny gardens and flagged alleys of the eastern side. The harbour is particularly picturesque with its countless brightly coloured fishing boats moored along the waterfront. Among the city’s impressive landmarks are the old walls, the Byzantine castle and the Kamares (aqueduct erected by Suleiman the Magnificent in the 16th century).

Kavala hosts a wide array of cultural events, which mostly take place during the summer months. One of the top festivals is the Festival of Philippi which lasts from July to September and includes theatrical performances and music concerts.

July is the hottest month in Kavala with an average temperature of 23.7°C (75°F) and the coldest is January at 7.6°C (46°F) with the most daily sunshine hours at 13 in July. The wettest month is November with an average of 60.2mm of rain.

With peaceful waters, sandy beaches, huge coastlines and organised or unexplored shores, with tavernas next to the sea, and unexpectedly beautiful spots, it's an open secret that the beaches of Kavala have it all! Its large port and a state-of-the-art marina is one of the most important fishing centres of Greece. Enjoy its open-air cafes and tavernas serving ouzo and mezes or wander around its shops, in the narrow lanes around Agios Nikolaos, next to the central square, where the shops still emit the aroma of another era. Large, modern department stores can still be found on the other side, in Omonia and Venizelou Streets. Kavala is gradually revealed in its different districts, in Ai-Yiannis, the district at the heart of the town, with the old mansions and church of the same name. In Kyprou St, with its wonderful neoclassical buildings. In the other districts of Kipoupoli, Vyronas, Potamoudia, Profitis Elias, Kallithea there are beautiful small houses with courtyards, gardens and tiled roofs.
