Bergerac is located on the northern bank of the Dordogne River, in the south-west France. It is among the largest towns in the region and is classified as a town of Art and History.
Bergerac is a medieval market town close enough to delve into the Dordogne. With emerald-green vineyards, grand chateaux and outdoor activities, it also has some of the the country’s best food and wine. If you’re after fairytale France, then this is it.
The highlight of a trip to Bergerac is the old town - the area immediately north of the river, signposted 'vieille ville'. This part of the town has some lovely streets and squares to explore, and a variety of boutique type shops. Maybe wander around the town looking for statues of the famous literary hero, Cyrano de Bergerac, or stop for a long lunch in the central square.
The nightlife is low-key but maybe take the opportunity to improve your French with friendly locals and expats over a glass of red wine.
The approximate flight time to Bergerac is 1 hour and 45 minutes.
In Bergerac, the summers are warm, the winters are very cold, and it is partly cloudy year round. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 34°F to 82°F and is rarely below 24°F or above 91°F. The best time of year to visit Bergerac for warm-weather activities is from early June to mid September.
Visit the Maison de Vins de Bergerac in the heart of the old town, a beautiful old cloister dating back to the 12th century. During the summer there are occasional concerts which take place there.
The food here, such as cheese, pâté, truffles is deliciously French with signature flavours including the Périgord black truffle and river trout.
On market days scour the stalls, with strawberries available in spring. When it comes to wine, there are 13 varieties that have the exclusive AOC seal of approval, so maybe book a tasting tour or two.
